About the event

Meet local author Michael Billington and find out all about the history of postcards in Urmston. Contrast postcards of the town, some as old as 120 years old, with photographs taken by the author.

The Golden Age of postcard collection, known as deltiology, was between the years 1902 and 1914, an era when collecting became popular.

With regular and efficient collections and deliveries it was common to see messages such as “See you at 2pm this afternoon”: the text message of yesteryear? Also, “Here’s another for your collection” and “one more for your album” show that people were sending postcards not only as a means of communication but as a means to help their friends and relatives to improve their collections.

This book looks at the development of the publishing and collecting of postcards in the Urmston, Flixton and Davyhulme area, some 7 miles or so south west of Manchester.…
